The goal of postgraduate medical education shall be to produce competent specialists and/or medical teachers:
who shall recognize the health needs of the community, and carry out professional obligations ethically and in keeping with the objectives of the national health policy
who shall have mastered most of the competencies, pertaining to the specialty, that are required to be practiced at the secondary and the tertiary levels of the health care delivery system;
who shall be aware of the contemporary advance and developments in the discipline concerned;
who shall have acquired a spirit of scientific inquiry and is oriented to the principles of research methodology and epidemiology; and
who shall have acquired the basic skills in the teaching of medical and paramedical professionals.
The period of training for obtaining these degrees shall be three completed years including the period of examination. Provided that in the case of students having a recognised two year postgraduate diploma course in the same subject, the period of training, including the period of examination, shall be two year.
The postgraduate students shall be required to participate in the teaching and training programme of undergraduate students and interns.
The major components of the postgraduate curriculum shall be:
Theoretical knowledge
Practical and clinical skills
Writing thesis/research articles
Attitudes including communication skills.
Training in research methodology, medical ethics and medicolegal aspects
All the candidates joining the postgraduate training programme shall work as ‘full-time residents’ during the period of training and shall attend not less than 80% (Eighty percent) of the imparted training during academic term of 6 months including assignments, assessed full time responsibilities and participation in all facets of the educational process.
Implementation of the training programmes for the award of various postgraduate degrees shall include the following:-
Basic medical sciences
The teaching and training of the students shall be through lectures, seminars, journal clubs, group discussions, participation in laboratory and experimental work, and involvement in research studies in the concerned speciality and exposure to the applied aspects of the subject relevant to clinical specialities.
Clinical disciplines
The teaching and training of the students shall include graded responsibility in the management and treatment of patients entrusted to their care; participation in seminars, journal clubs, group discussions, clinical meetings, grand rounds, and clinico-pathological conferences; practical training in diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment; training in the Basic Medical Sciences, as well as in allied clinical specialities.
A postgraduate student of a postgraduate degree course in broad specialities/super specialities would be required to present one poster presentation, to read one paper at a national/state conference and to present one research paper which should be published/accepted for publication/sent for publication during the period of his postgraduate studies so as to make him eligible to appear at the postgraduate degree examination.
Number of examinations
The university shall conduct not more than two examinations in a year, for any subject, with an interval of not less than 4 and not more than 6 months between the two examinations.
M.D./M.S. examinations, in any subject shall consist of Thesis, Theory Papers, and clinical/Practical and Oral examinations.
Thesis
Every candidate shall carry out work on an assigned research project under the guidance of a recognised postgraduate teacher, the result of which shall be written up and submitted in the form of a thesis.
Work for writing the thesis is aimed at contributing to the development of a spirit of enquiry, besides exposing the candidate to the techniques of research, critical analysis, acquaintance with the latest advances in medical science and the manner of identifying and consulting available literature. Thesis shall be submitted at least six months before the Theory and Clinical / Practical examination.
Theory
There shall be four theory papers.
Out of these one shall be of basic medical sciences and one shall be of recent advances.
The theory examinations shall be held sufficiently earlier than the clinical and practical examination, so that the answer books can be assessed and evaluated before the start of the clinical/practical and oral examination.
Clinical / Practical and Oral
Clinical examination for the subjects in Clinical Sciences shall be conducted to test the knowledge and competence of the candidates for undertaking independent work as a specialist/Teacher, for which candidates shall examine a minimum one long case and two short cases.
Practical examination for the subjects in Basic Medical Sciences shall be conducted to test the knowledge and competence of the candidates for making valid and relevant observations based on the experimental/Laboratory studies and his ability to perform such studies as are relevant to his subject. The Oral examination shall be thorough and shall aim at assessing the candidate knowledge and competence about the subject, investigative procedures, therapeutic technique and other aspects of the speciality, which form a part of the examination.
A candidate shall secure not less than 50% marks in each head of passing which shall include (1) Theory, (2) Practical including clinical and viva voce examination.
The medical college follows the rules as set out by the Medical Council of India and where applicable the rules of set out by other bodies, and the students must note that these are rules are subject to change. For more information, please refer to the Medical Council of India Postgraduate Medical Educations Regulations, 2000.
The candidate shall posses recognized MBBS degree or equivalent qualificaons and should have obtained permanent registraon with the Naonal Medical Commission/Medical Council of India or any of the State Medical Councils or should obtain the same within one month from the date of his/her admission, failing which the admission of the candidate shall be cancelled. In the case of a foreign naonal, the Naonal Medical Commission may, on payment of the prescribed fee for registraon, grant temporary registraon for the duraon of the postgraduate training restricted to the medical college/instuon to which he/she is admied for the me being exclusively for postgraduate studies. Temporary registraon to such foreign naonal shall be subject to the condion that such a person is duly registered as medical praconer in his/her own country from which he/she has obtained his basic medical qualificaon and that his/her degree is recognized by the corresponding medical council or the concerned authority.
Age: There is no age limit for admission in the postgraduate medical courses.
We accept a total of 77 students per year in our postgraduate medical (MD/MS) courses. The allocation of seats are as follows:

In case reserved seats are not filled up by candidates of the respective category, the remaining vacant seats will be filled up by the candidates from general category.
It is compulsory for all postgraduate students after successful completion of course to serve in college for one year as senior resident as per the need of the college. The college shall pay minimum remuneration of Rs. 90,000/- (Ninety thousand) per month.
The fees for postgraduate degree courses are payable annually at the beginning of each academic year, i.e., 5th May or date as notified by the University each year. The annual fee structure for different courses are given below:

In case of payment of fee in Indian currency by NRI candidate, the USD conversion rate applicable on the date of payment of fee shall be payable.
Further, candidates seeking admission to postgraduate degree courses with recognized diploma qualification in the same subject shall be required to pay tuition fee equivalent to the fee of three years postgraduate degree course. The fee for the additional one year, during which period the same seat will remain vacant, is to be paid in two equal installments during commencement of the two academic years of the course.
(ii) At the time of the admission while paying the fees for 1st year through Bank Draft/RTGS/NEFT, the candidate shall also have to furnish Bank Guarantee / Bond for payment of tuition fees for the remaining period of the course.
(iii) At the time of the admission, the candidate must pay tuition fee, Hostel fee, Student amenities and services fee and refundable security deposit.
(iv) University Registration Fee: Rs. 18,000/- (Rupees Eighteen thousand only) payable once at the time of registration. The admitted candidates must obtain migration certificate from their last university and submit the same along with the registration fee to Al-Karim University within 3 months of admission.
(v) Hostel: The rent for hostel accommodation is Rs. 3,00,000/- (Rupees three lakhs only) per annum and as Junior Resident hostel accommodation is compulsory. The hostel fee is payable for three years. Candidates staying in the hostel for more than 3 years either due to failure in examination or extension of residency or any other reason shall be required to pay additional hostel fee for their additional stay. The extended duration shall be divided in a fraction of 6 or 12 months and accordingly fee shall be payable as per scheduled date every year.
(vi) Student Amenities and Services Fee: Rs.50,000.00 (Rupees fifty thousand only) per annum (Transport, Sports, Gymnasium, Wi-Fi etc. as per policy of the college).
(vii) Examination, Thesis Evaluation and Related Fee: Examination, thesis evaluation, and related fee shall be charged as notified by the University
(viii) Convocation fee: Convocation fee shall be charged after completion of course as notified by the university.
(ix) Refundable Security Deposit: All candidates are required to deposit Rs. 3,00,000/- (Rupees three lakhs only) as security deposit at the time of admission. This amount is refundable and shall be refunded after deducting dues, if any, after completion of the course.
(x) Late Fine: Late fine@Rs.1,000/- (Rupees one thousand only) per day is applicable in case of late payment of prescribed fee after 5th May or due date as notified by the University every year.
(xi) A candidate once admitted in the college shall not be allowed to leave the college without paying every category of fee for the remaining period of the course. In addition he/she has to refund the stipend received during the course if he/she leaves the college without completing the course.
Note: The above fee structure is subject to condition that in case the tuition fee of the 50% of the total seats is fixed at par with the fee of the Government Medical College of the State by the government/fee regulatory authority, then the tuition fee of the rest of the 50% of the total seats will be revised and the students shall pay the revised tuition fee including the first year fee.
In addition, if any other type of fees are revised for any number of seats by the government/fee regulatory authority, then such fees of the of the total remaining seats will be revised and the students shall pay the revised fees including the first year fees.
(xii) Fee Concession: In accordance with clause 36 (2) of the Bihar Private Universities Act 2013, the fee concession shall be provided to twenty-five percent of the students who are domicile of Bihar and who belong to SC, ST, BC, EBC, women and economically weaker section. Fee concession shall be based on merit- cum-means as follows :-
(i) One-fifth of twenty-five percent shall be granted full fee concession;
(ii) Two-fifth of the twenty five percent shall be granted fifty percent fee concession;
(iii) The balance two-fifth of the twenty five percent shall be granted twenty five percent fee concession.
The above fee concession shall be applicable only on tuition fee payable each year and the fee concession shall not be applicable on NRI seats.
To be eligible for fee concession, the applicants must have scored more than 60th percentile in the entrance examination (NEET) and family must be below poverty line (BPL) entitled.
To be eligible for fee concession, the applicant must fulfil all four criteria.
Applicants who fit into the criteria must bring original and submit a self-attested photocopy of each of the following to the university:
i) Domicile certificate of Bihar issued by Sub-Divisional Magistrate.
ii) Proof, issued by the competent authority, that the applicant belongs to SC, ST, BC, EBC, or Economically Weaker Section.
iii) Proof, issued by the competent authority, that the applicant's family is below poverty line (BPL) entitled or BPL Ration Card.
Candidates will make full payment of fee at the time of admission. After closing date of admission, category wise eligible candidates amongst the admitted candidates will be granted fee concession and their fee already paid will be either refunded or adjusted.
Note: Above fee concession will be granted subject to condition that in case the fee of the 50% of the total seats is fixed at par with the fee of Govt. Medical College of the State, then this concession will not be applicable.

Counselling
Applications for admission in MD/MS courses will be invited by Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board, Patna. Candidate will have to apply online as directed and follow the instructions issued from time to time.
Dates and venue of counseling by personal appearance and/or online will be notified by the Government of Bihar through its appropriate authority, i.e., Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board, Patna.
Candidates in the order of merit shall be called for counselling and for verification of original documents and identity by personal appearance. The counselling will be performed and the placement will be done on merit-cum-choice basis. No change in the choice will be allowed later on. The candidates coming late during counselling may be considered but placement will be done only on the existing vacancy at the time.
In addition to the documents required by the BCECE Board, Patna, the candidates should bring their NEET-PG 2023 admit card, call letter and other related documents including rotatory internship completion certificate, printout of NEET-PG 2023 result, photocopy of NEET-PG 2023 admit card, photocopy of ID proof (Aadhaar card), photocopy of PAN card (self), photocopy of PAN card (father and mother/guardian), 10th completion certificate, 12th completion certificate, MBBS completion certificate, medical permanent registration document, mark sheet of 1st, 2nd, 3rd Prof. MBBS course, admit card of 3rd Prof. MBBS Part-II course, college leaving certificate, attempt certificate, character certificate, no objection certificate from employer (if any), all in original, in support of their eligibility.
The candidates will be asked to exercise their option for the course from among those available at their merit serial after their original certificates/documents and identity are duly verified. Thereafter necessary order will be issued the same day for allotment of the course on merit-cum-choice basis as opted by them provided they have been found eligible in all respects.
The candidates shall have to join the course within the date mentioned in their allotment letter with all necessary documents and requisite fees etc., failing which their candidature may be cancelled.
Candidates must fulfil the eligibility criteria as fixed by the appropriate authority to be eligible for admission in any postgraduate course.
No candidate shall be permitted to pursue more than one course at the same time.
No candidate shall be enrolled for two courses simultaneously, i.e., as a regular student for one course and as an ex-student for the other course.
If a candidate has been admitted in a postgraduate degree/diploma course in any speciality on the basis of an earlier postgraduate medical entrance test, then he/she will not be eligible for admission in a postgraduate degree course of another speciality on the basis of current NEET-PG 2023 unless:-
He/she resigns and vacates the seat of postgraduate degree/diploma course against which he/she has been admitted earlier, within seven days of receiving of the admission order on the basis of current NEET-PG 2023.
He/ she returns all the pecuniary benefits taken thereof for the earlier course, and
He/she is liable to pay compensation for leaving the earlier course if the final decision regarding the same is made by the appropriate authority before the commencement of the counselling based on the current NEET-PG 2023.
